Flying visit to Amsterdam

March 17, 2018

My sister and I treated my mum to a little trip to Amsterdam as her Birthday / Mother’s Day present. We’ve both been previously (but this is my first time as a vegan instead of a veggie) so were excited to show her the ropes!

My Vegan Kind box came to the rescue the morning of the flight and provided me with some tasty goodies to take along with me. The quinoa cookies in particular were amazing and I’ll be ordering more in future!

I barely had time to browse through the inflight magazine but read an interesting article from a proclaimed meat lover reviewing Eat By Chloe, The Vurger Co and Temple of Seitan. I was only expecting to be reading about what top places to visit in each European city and see adverts for perfume so was pleasantly surprised to find lovely looking vegan food being shown to such a large audience.

Funnily enough our first purchase (before even leaving the train station) was soya milk as we were all dying for a brew and there were no plant based milk options on our flight.

Waffles and pancakes are a staple of many Amsterdam eateries and after doing a bit of research (and help from @lucymiawhisker ‘s tips on her blog) I learned that a little place called The Happy Pig had vegan options.

I chose pancakes with maple and strawberries, they were lovely but a little soy whip or extra maple would have gone down a treat.

We trekked far and wide to find Pizza Heart and couldn’t wait to sit down, rest and enjoy a bottle of wine and pizza. Unfortunately we didn’t realise that Pizza Heart was a tiny takeaway restaurant so we walked on to Rembrandtplein Square to sit and people watch.

The pizza we had wasn’t fantastic (it tasted like a frozen pizza base) but the wine and break from walking was very welcome.

After last night we headed to the closest Starbucks knowing there should be vegan and vegetarian options available. I had the vegan Berry Bircher with an oat milk latte and it was gorgeous. Oat is my favourite plant based milk and I’m not sure what brand Starbucks use but it tasted like Oatly Barista and that is pure life.

We grabbed some bananas for our canal boat trip to tie us over until the main event - lunch at Vegan Junk Food Bar.

After much consideration my mum and sister chose the Original VJFB Burger each, and I went for the Notorious Sumo Burger (as I really did feel cheated by the sad pizza situation the night before 😂) with a portion of parmesan and truffle oil fries to share.

It was honestly the best vegan burger I’ve ever had and is up there in the best burger ever category for me (along with a couple of veggie burgers from the past!). Double plant-based ‘beef’ patties, the best vegan cheddar slice I’ve tasted, onion rings, lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, pickles and a spring and fried onion mix 🤤 Literally didn’t even care that there was cheese on my face it was worth it. It’s like a badge of food honour after enjoying that burger.

After our feast, we had to have a long walk and luckily Vondelpark was right by us. Ive never ventured around the park before so we had a nice leisurely stroll and found a couple of lovely colourful birds swooping around also.

I’m sure if you check out my insta then you’ll know I’m a huge cat lady with my little Korat, Ginny, being the apple of my eye. We even found a male Dutch version of her sunbathing in the window of a townhouse 😻

There’s a gorgeous looking sandwich shop in Schiphol Airport called Bread! but unfortunately there were no options for me and I fancied something savoury for the plane. Luckily we happened to see the Starbucks siren logo peeping behind it and they saved the day once again with a chickpea & beetroot hummus wrap and Nordic club avocado flatbread which we shared between us.

Until next time Amsterdam, it’s been an absolute pleasure as usual. Thank you for the great food and new furry friends xox
